Abstract
A retrospective analysis of 34 patients with ductal carcinoma in situ(DCIS) was performed. Mean age was 48 years with ranges from 30 to 71. Contralateral breast cancer was found in 17.6% of the patients. The proportion of ductal carcinoma in situ
to
breast cancer was increased from 7.1% to 17.0% for 10 years, Clinical presentations of DCIS were mass, nipple discharge, breast pain and suspicious mammographic findings. Patients presentating mass and nipple discharge were decreased, while
mammographically detected DCIS were increased. Histologic review was performed by one pathologist and diagnosis was confirmed. Tumor size was not related to microinvasion. Proportion of comedo type was not related to the microinvasion. There was
no
axillary lymph node metastasis. Treatment modoality was changed to more conservative precedures. One patient died of systemic metastasis of secondary ovarian cancer. The others survived well without local recurrence or distant metastasis for a
mean
follow-up of 22.5 months(range 1 to 113). We concluded that short term good results could be achieved regardless of presence of microinvasion, histologic type or type of surgery.
